About the Session

Everyone wants to be a manager until they are one. Research and professional observations show that 60% of managers fail within 24 months – and many of them are still in place. This raises three questions:

  • Why do they fail?
  • Why does it take so long to admit they are failing?
  • What do we do about it?

When we ask a person to move from labor into management, we’ve asked them to make the biggest career change of their lives, and the odds are stacked against them.

If you are wondering whether this is for you or your organization, consider this:

  • What does the transition from labor to supervision or management really involve?
  • What are the top traits of successful managers?
  • How are you preparing yourself or your people to be successful?
  • Why are working supervisors really in the toughest spot?
  • What the term ‘Safety Begins with Leadership” really means.

Participants will learn:

  • The top traits of effective managers.
  • Why their title alone does not mean success?
  • The three (plus) things the next level of success requires.
  • How their behavior affects how they get things done.

Moving out of labor and into management involves a change – from working with tools and objects to working with people and data. Understanding that change helps us understand how to make the transition with a greater chance of success. Every properly trained and motivated employee is a key person. Research shows that the true cost of losing a key person can be as much as 3 to 15 times their salary. That’s if they don’t cost you a team or a valued customer. While making a ‘good’ hire is critical, retaining employees is just as critical. We must see hiring and retention as a system – not separate processes.

Who should attend:

  • Owners
  • Executives
  • Managers
  • Supervisors
  • Human Resources
  • Safety personnel
